昨日のニューヨーク・タイムズに次のような表現が一面トップの記事に出てた。

Mr. Obama would overhaul health care, begin to arrest global warming, expand the federal role in education and shift more costs to some corporations and the wealthiest taxpayers.

ここで arrest という言葉が使われているのが興味深いと思った。辞書を引くと、”stop or check (progress or a process)” という意味もあるそうで、まさにこれにあたる。すなわち、地球温暖化の進行を止める、あるいは抑制するという意味になりそうだ。

言葉の使い方は実に奥が深いものである。
